The Garifuna are a marginalized group of people divided across the Western coastlines of the Caribbean. I visited a village in Honduras, the government with Western environmental groups had just declared the area around this village, and the historical homeland of Honduran Garifuna part of a new National Park meant to protect the environment. Except I learned that its left hundreds of self sufficient Garifuna communities unable to work the land, fish the sea, access public education or receive basic health care.
